Electrical and instrumentation design for a railway trainset.

Electrical and instrumentation design, and development of automation software for a railway trainset with an overall length of approximately 80 m.

It consists of 4 cars (modules), 3 of which are equipped with a diesel engine of nearly 600 kW. Each is coupled to an electric generator of nearly 500 kW, as well as 4 variable-displacement hydraulic pumps for traction and auxiliary services.

Each module has four axles, two of which are equipped with hydraulic motors and a two-speed mechanical gearbox pneumatically controlled.

Each module is equipped with 1,500 liters of diesel fuel, plus an additional 4,500 liters stored in the service module for automatic refueling of the modules when required.

There are 34 synchronous motors, each rated at 37 kW, water-cooled and driven by inverters.

The system also includes:

  • 44 electric actuators with stepper motors,
  • 44 pneumatic cylinders,
  • 44 absolute linear encoders, and
  • 44 absolute rotary encoders.

In addition, there are pumps, compressors, chillers, a dust extraction and abatement system with bag filters, and 600-liter hydraulic power units installed on each module.

The trainset is also equipped with a wildfire firefighting system and detection systems inside the engine compartments. Each module has 1,200-liter water tanks, and the service module includes two tanks of nearly 5,000 liters each for automatic distribution of water and diesel fuel to the other modules.

There are two control cabins equipped with heating, cooling, and intercom communication systems.

The system is managed by seven safety PLCs, whose CPUs communicate via a ring network and collect field data through approximately one hundred remote I/O modules.
