Non-destructive testing (NDT) VT, MT, PT, and UT, and functional tests on port-type cranes for the purpose of residual life assessment
The non-destructive testing plan carried out was aimed at gathering information on the condition of any imperfections—without altering the material in any way—on its soundness/compactness, and on the results of subsequent processing up to the finished product, for the purpose of calculating the residual service life.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) activities on accessible welds on the main parts and sections of industrial lifting equipment were performed by qualified Level II operators in accordance with the requirements of UNI EN ISO 9712 (formerly UNI EN 473).
NDT was performed using the following methods:
- Visual testing (VT)
- Magnetic particle testing (MT)
- Penetrant testing (PT)
- Ultrasonic testing (UT)
The most suitable method was selected in order to identify indications supporting acceptance or non-acceptance of the inspections.
To ensure full efficiency, equipment complete with calibration certificate and operating procedure was used.
A final technical report was issued on the inspection results, together with a report for the residual life calculation.
