Design of Stifone sluice gates for restoration

Design activities related to the refurbishment of the intermediate and upper portions of the triple sluice gate “La Morica”, which currently dams the course of the Nera River in the Stifone area of Narni, forming a reservoir whose waters are used for the production of hydroelectric power.

The original dam dates back to the 1930s and consists of two parts, one on the left and one on the right, each bounded by reinforced concrete piers. Each part has overall dimensions of approximately 9 m in height (retained water head) and 8 m in width (clear span), and is composed of three elements: a lower element (with a lattice structure), an intermediate element (a circular beam reinforced with ribs, known as “force sickles”), and an upper “fan-shaped” element hinged to the intermediate element, with an overflow-profiled crest.

During lifting, the lower element engages the head of the intermediate element and pulls it upward.
The fan-shaped element is hinged above the intermediate body, and its lifting/lowering is carried out by chains connected to a counterweight system independent of the main lifting mechanism.
